My sister-in-law, Mendi, is one of the most special people in my life. Whether I am living in Texas or overseas, she is always there for me. She helps organize birthday and Christmas packages for me just so I feel loved. We text almost daily and always know what’s going on in one another’s lives. I’m so lucky to have a friend like her. I wanted to do something really special and a little out of the ordinary for her 30th birthday. I gave Mendi a photoshoot as her gift — but not just any photoshoot, a 30th birthday cake smash!
30th birthday cake smashes are a new craze in photography. Cake smashes are typically done for a one-year-old’s birthday. It’s just a really cute way to watch a baby eat cake for the first time. It’s always so priceless to see their reaction. Recently, some creative genius thought, “Why do one year olds get to have all of the fun tearing into a birthday cake with their bare hands?!” and started the adult cake smash trend. The concept is simple — an adult birthday girl (typically a milestone birthday like 21, 30, 40, etc.), a cake and some decorations. Wine or champagne also helps! Boys can join in on the fun too, but as of now it’s primarily a girl thing.
For Mendi’s cake smash I made the tutu myself out of small rolls of tulle. I also enlisted the help of an old friend to make the cake. If you happen to live in or around Denton, Texas, I highly recommend Queen Esther’s Cupcakes. She primarily bakes cupcakes — the most beautiful and delicious cupcakes you’ve ever seen — but she is also branching out into cake baking. We love how Mendi’s birthday cake turned out. Besides the fact that Esther bakes divine cakes and cupcakes, it’s so important to support local businesses!
Dave and I were really nervous about the photoshoot since it was our very first indoor shoot. A few months ago Dave got me a shoot-through umbrella and stand for our off camera flash and this was our very first time to play around with it. Although there’s room for improvement, we are so happy with how the photos turned out and Mendi loved them too.
Happy birthday, Mendi! I hope your 30’s are your best yet!
