Dave and I have officially made it to our first anniversary of marital bliss. As we take a break from snowy Kazakhstan and celebrate our love in the beautiful Maldives, we can’t help but think back to this day one year ago. We spent a lot of time today talking about our favorite parts of that day. So many of the best parts were in the small stuff.
I liked the idea of keeping some old traditions alive so Dave and I slept in separate hotel rooms the night before the wedding. Though Dave is typically the sentimental one in our relationship, I remember calling him around 11:30pm because I missed him. We’d only just seen each other not even an hour earlier, but the bed just didn’t feel right without him there. We talked and talked. Neither one of us could sleep and it was nice to have some company. I couldn’t tell you anything we talked about, but that conversation was one of my favorite things.
The next morning all of the bridesmaids gathered in my room at the Grand Hotel in McKinney. My amazing friends Amanda and Kimmy so graciously offered to do my hair and makeup for the wedding and all of the portraits. They truly made me feel like the most beautiful girl in the world and I am so grateful for them! Another highlight of the day for me was how everyone rallied together to help one another get ready. I love looking at all of the photos from the morning because it really shows that it was a group effort and it makes my heart smile.
Meanwhile, Dave and the guys were sipping whiskey as they got ready on the other side of the hotel. They had a mild panic when none of them knew how to fold a pocket square. Luckily, between the help of one of the guys and google, they managed to figure it out.
The ceremony was short and sweet. It was very special to me that both of my brothers were able to participate in our wedding. My brother, Josh, was our officiant and my brother, JJ, gave a reading during the ceremony. My dad was there to walk me down the aisle. Our best friends were standing by our sides. And a group of our closest loved ones were watching as we committed ourselves to one another for life.
The reception was so beautiful! Our wedding planner did such an amazing job at helping me make my vision a reality. Every detail was perfect and I wouldn’t have changed a thing.
Dave and I surprised everyone by learning choreography for our first dance. And to top everything off, Meiko — one of my favorite singers — sang live as we danced to one of her original songs!
The speeches had to have been one of the highlights of the night. The dads gave really lovely speeches and our maid of honor and best man made us laugh and cry and even laugh until we cried. Seriously, their speeches were all amazing!
The rest of the evening was just one big party. Our band, Identity Theft, put on an amazing show and we all danced and had a great time!
At the end of the night we headed back to the hotel in our car that was decorated by Dave’s groomsmen. Since we met in Korea, we thought it was our duty to decorate our post-wedding car just like Koreans do. It’s one of those things that Americans and Australians may not get, but we loved it!
And just like that, the wedding was over! It was such a blur, but it’s a day we will always cherish.
Here’s a list of the vendors that helped make our day so very special!
